Viloria de Rioja
BurgosCastilla y León
Dual toponym. Viloria, from the Latin villa aurea ('golden villa') or vill-oria (affective diminutive of villa, 'little villa'), depending on whether the semantic or morphological reading is preferred. De Rioja is a modern geographical complement (20th century) to distinguish it from other Vilorias. It is the documented birthplace of Saint Dominic of the Calzada.
The traditional reading of Viloria appeals to villa aurea ('golden villa'), applied to a privileged or prosperous settlement. The contemporary morphological reading prefers vill-oria, an affective diminutive of villa with the suffix -oria documented in other Rioja-Burgos toponyms (cf. Aboria, Pancorbo → Pancorboria). Both are phonetically possible. The complement de Rioja is an official addition from 1916 to avoid confusion with Viloria de la Jurisdicción (León) and Viloria de Trasmiera (Cantabria). The village is famous for being the documented birthplace of Domingo García —Saint Dominic of the Calzada—, born here around 1019 in a humble family of farmers. The parish church preserves the baptismal font where he was baptised, a pilgrim devotion since the 12th century.
