Hornillos del Camino

Camino Francés

BurgosCastilla y León

From the Castilian hornillos, plural diminutive of horno: 'little ovens'. It refers to the rural ovens —wood-fired, bread or Roman milestones— preserved on the site in early medieval times. The qualifier del Camino distinguishes it from Castilian homonyms.

The toponym is transparent —plural diminutive of horno (Latin furnus)—, but the concrete referent is debated. The three most widespread readings: a) communal medieval bread ovens, a habitual installation in repopulation hamlets; b) Roman ovens for tiles and ceramics (they existed in the area); c) Roman milestones shaped like small ovens, still visible in the 11th century. The medieval form Fornellos (with initial f-) underwent the Castilian f → h shift in the 15th century. The qualifier del Camino, added in the 12th, distinguishes it from other peninsular Hornillos (Hornillos de Cameros, Hornillos de Cerrato).

Glossary

Diminutive
A derived form indicating smaller size or affection, formed with suffixes such as -illo, -ito, -uelo. In toponymy, substantivised plurals abound: Hornillos, Pradillos, Barrillos.
Palatalisation
A phonetic shift in which a sound is articulated against the palate. In Castilian, the initial Latin f- passed through aspiration to the present-day silent h- (furnus → horno) between the 14th and 16th centuries.
Repopulation
A medieval process by which the Christian kingdoms of the northern Iberian peninsula resettled territories reconquered from al-Andalus. Generates a whole layer of repopulation toponyms: Bercianos (those from El Bierzo), Navarrete (little Navarre), Castellanos, Gallegos.
