Here Camino Francés, Camino del Norte and Camino Primitivo converge. It is one of the points where the pilgrim shares the way with those arriving by another route.

Pre-Roman toponym of disputed origin. The leading reading in the dedicated studies is hydronymic: it links the name to the old Palaeo-European hydronymy, from an Indo-European root meaning “to flow”, tied to water. Alternatives propose a medieval personal name Arcius/Arzeus and a pre-Roman root of opaque meaning. Documented from the 9th century as Arzua or Arçoa.

Documented in the Tumbo of Sobrado around 832, the toponym has no settled etymology, but the dedicated toponymic study reads it above all as a hydronym: a pre-Roman form *Artíowa evolving into Arzúa, from an Indo-European root meaning “to flow, to move” —the same Palaeo-European hydronymy that runs through Europe’s rivers—, perhaps compounded with -uba “water”. Some Galician onomasts prefer to leave the root opaque, without firm parallels, like other northwest monosyllables such as Mos, Teo or Sarria. A third path posits a medieval personal name, Arcius or Arzeus, common in Celtic areas but without firm epigraphic attestation. Arzúa is today famous for Queso de Arzúa-Ulloa, with protected designation of origin since 1989: a soft-paste cow’s milk cheese with a thin rind, one of the gastronomic emblems of the Camino.
