Bercianos del Real Camino
LeónCastilla y León
From the demonym berciano 'native of El Bierzo' (a Leonese region over Bergidum Flavium) + del Real Camino, the medieval designation of the Jacobean route as an official road protected by the crown.
The toponym commemorates the medieval repopulation of the place with people from El Bierzo, a Leonese region to the west over the former Roman Bergidum Flavium. The plural Bercianos 'those from Bierzo' named the colonies of Bercian repopulators in the rest of the Leonese kingdom, similar to Castellanos, Gallegos, Asturianos in Castilian toponymy. The qualifier del Real Camino, attested from the 14th century, distinguishes the town from other peninsular Bercianos (Bercianos de Aliste, Bercianos de Páramo): it sits on the Via Trajana/Camino Francés, considered a Royal Road for being protected by royal charters since Alfonso VI. The hamlet preserves its medieval profile: a single long street, adobe houses, cylindrical dovecotes in the kitchen gardens.
