Ligonde

LugoGalicia

Toponym of disputed origin, possibly pre-Roman over a root lig- of opaque meaning, or from the Gothic personal name Ligundius. The hamlet was an Order of Malta encomienda between the 12th and 19th centuries.

Documented in 1063 as Ligonde in a donation by King García II to the monastery of Samos, the toponym lacks consensus etymology. The pre-Roman hypothesis connects it to a lig- root without firm parallels, attested in some European hydronyms. The anthroponymic, defended by Piel and the Portuguese onomastic school, posits the Gothic name Ligundius, attested in other repopulated enclaves of the northwest. Independent of origin, Ligonde has Jacobean relevance for having been an Order of Malta encomienda (Knights Hospitaller) between 1184 and 1873: the hamlet sustained a pilgrim hospital and a chapel under the Johannine rule. The Cruceiro de Ligonde, Gothic of the 15th century in carved granite, still marks the crossroads at the village exit — one of the oldest cruceiros of the French Camino on Galician soil.
