Cizur Menor

Zizur Txikia

Camino Francés

NavarraNavarra

Basque toponym of disputed origin. The main hypotheses derive it from a root zizu- without firm parallels, or from the medieval personal name Zizur. Menor (Basque Txikia) distinguishes it from neighbouring Cizur Mayor.

Documented from 1097 in the Roncesvalles cartulary as Zizur, the toponym lacks consensus etymology. The anthroponymic hypothesis posits a medieval personal name Zizur, attested in early medieval Navarrese onomastics but without clear affiliation. The pre-Basque hypothesis explores a root zizu- of opaque meaning, without firm peninsular parallels. The qualifier Menor appears in the 13th century to distinguish this hamlet from neighbouring Cizur Mayor, today a residential area of Pamplona. The Church of San Miguel, Romanesque of the 12th, was an Order of Saint John of Jerusalem encomienda until the 19th-century hospitaller dissolution.

Evolution of the name

  1. Zizur Basque / medieval Latin from the 11th century
  2. Cizur Menor / Zizur Txikia Castilian / Basque from the 13th century

Reflections, to the letter

The village sign carries both names — Cizur Menor in Castilian and Zizur Txikia in Basque — and is one of the first places where the Francés pilgrim sees the dual spelling on every corner. The small hamlet facing its Mayor twin is one of the most common patterns in Basque-Navarrese toponymy: two sisters, the large and the small, from the same ancient name.
