Donostia / San Sebastián
San Sebastián
Gipuzkoa · GuipúzcoaEuskadi / País Vasco · País Vasco
Double hagiotoponym: in Basque Donostia (from Done Sebastian 'Saint Sebastian', with medieval contraction of done 'holy, dignity'); in Castilian San Sebastián, translation of the compound. The 3rd-century Roman martyr named the Benedictine abbey (12th century) around which the town grew.
The Basque form Donostia is the phonetic compression of Done Sebastian — 'Saint Sebastian' —, parallel to Castilian Sancti Sebastiani which evolved as San Sebastián. The first element, done, is the medieval Basque word for 'holy, dignity, honour', a learned loan from the Latin dominus ('lord') taken through Christianity: the same word as Castilian don, Italian donno, French don. Done was used in old Basque as a treatment for saints (Done Eztebe = Saint Stephen, Done Jakue = Saint James, Donibane = Saint John). The contraction Done Sebastian → Donostia follows the same elision pattern as Castilian Sanctus Facundus → Sahagún or Sancti Emeterii → Santander. The Benedictine monastery founded in the 12th century —still standing as the Church of San Vicente— originated the medieval burgh, which received a charter from Sancho VI the Wise of Navarre in 1180.
