Andrín
Principado de Asturias
Possessive toponym from the Latin Andrini (genitive of the anthroponym Andrinus, derived from the Greek Andros, 'male, man', with the Latin suffix -inus). It documents a rural villa owned by an Andrino —a Christian name frequent in early-medieval onomastics through the devotion to Saint Andrew the apostle.
Andrinus is a personal name derived from the Greek aner, andros ('male'), the base from which also come Andrés, Alejandro and Andrónico. The diminutive or affective form Andrinus, with the suffix -inus, was frequent in early-medieval Christian anthroponymy through the devotion to Saint Andrew —the fisherman apostle, brother of Simon Peter, patron of fishermen and, by extension, of coastal towns. The formula villa Andrini, 'the villa of Andrino', contracted to the final genitive by Castilian evolution, gave the current Andrín. The hamlet, in the council of Llanes, sits beside the eponymous beach —one of the best known on the eastern Asturian coast, with fine sand and the cornice cliffs in the background. The parish church is dedicated, coherently with the anthroponymic etymology, to Saint Andrew. The pilgrim crosses it in the coastal stretch between Pendueles and Llanes.
