Distrito de Viana do CasteloPortugal

Toponym derived from the Latin arcucellum, a diminutive of arcus ('arch'), with the affective suffix -cellum that generated the Portuguese form -zelo. It means 'small arch', 'modest arches' —a description applied either to minor architectural structures (a chapel arch, a small bridge arch) or to a curved geographical bend.

The double suffix of the toponym is interesting. Arcus, 'arch', was already a common noun; late Latin generated the diminutive arcucellum by adding -cellum, an affective suffix of smaller scale. Portuguese phonetics palatalised the cluster: arcucellum → arcozelo. The diminutive form insists on the modesty of the scale —in contrast with simple Arcos, which designates larger or more numerous structures. There are several Arcozelos in Portugal, all linked to some minor architectural structure or curved geographical feature. The one at Ponte de Lima preserves the matrix church of São Salvador, with a Romanesque porch of several small arches —probable origin of the toponym. The freguesia sits south of Ponte de Lima crossing the river Lima; the pilgrim treads it on leaving the town, before climbing toward Rubiães.
