Andalusian Arabic toponym derived from al-qaras ('the cold, the fresh place'), from classical qaras, description of the local microclimate of the lower Segre with especially cold winters.
Town of the Segrià reconquered in 1149. Fruit-growing centre of western Catalunya with production of peach, pear and apple certified Lleida Fruit Protected Geographical Indication.

Annual production of 460,000 tonnes in 30,000 irrigated hectares of the Urgell Canal. It represents 80% of the peninsular production of Conference pear.
