Casazorrina

Camino Primitivo

AsturiasAsturias

Romance compound from the Castilian casa (Latin casa, 'country house') plus the anthroponym Zorrina, diminutive of the Roman cognomen Sorinus with the Asturleonese suffix -ina. It designates 'house of Zorrina', early medieval property of the old seigneury of the place.

The hamlet of Casazorrina is documented from 1145 in cartularies of the Cornellana monastery. It is a rural stop between Cornellana and Salas, settled in the meadow of the Narcea river. It preserves the Cantabrian rural physiognomy with 17th and 18th-century emblazoned houses of the old Asturian hidalgos.

Glossary

Anthroponym
A personal name, often used as the base of toponyms (Lucronius → Logroño, Sigerici → Castrojeriz, Sacavus → Sacavém).
Asturian hidalguía
Legal condition of untitled nobility characteristic of Asturias and other zones of the northern peninsula during the Old Regime (15th-19th centuries). Asturian hidalgos —recognised as nobles by proven descent from old Christians without Jewish or Moorish blood— enjoyed fiscal exemptions, the right to bear arms and judicial precedence. Asturias came to have in the 18th century more than 50% of its population classified as hidalga, a unique proportion in Spain.
Diminutive
A derived form indicating smaller size or affection, formed with suffixes such as -illo, -ito, -uelo, -ete. Substantivised plural diminutives abound in toponymy: Hornillos, Boadilla, Calzadilla, Comillas, Pradillos.
