Alcaracejos

Camino Mozárabe

CórdobaAndalucía

Diminutive arabism derived from Andalusian al-Karāj ('open field, pastureland'), with Castilian diminutive suffix -ejos.

Town of the Pedroches Valley, dehesa region of northern Cordoba. Traditional centre of extensive Iberian pork livestock under holm oak dehesa.

Evolution of the name

  1. al-Karāj Andalusi Arabic 9th–11th centuries
  2. Alcaracejos medieval Castilian from the 13th century

Reflections, to the letter

The name comes from Andalusi al-Karāj, «open ground, pasture», and you only need to leave the village to see it: here the Pedroches dehesa begins, the largest grazed holm-oak woodland on earth, the view dissolving into oaks and cattle with no fence to break it. The open pasture the Arabic word named is still there, unchanged beneath the same trees.
