Glossary

Order of Santiago
Military order founded in 1170 by Pedro Fernández de Castro for the defence of the Christian frontier and the protection of pilgrims to the Camino de Santiago. After the reconquest of the Guadalquivir valley (1212-1248), it received territorial commanderies in Sierra Morena and the Cordovan Campiña (Bélmez, Belalcázar, Villaharta). Its territorial patrimony was the largest of the peninsular military orders.
