Glossary

Andalusian channel
Hydraulic canalisation system developed in al-Andalus between the 9th and 15th centuries for intensive agricultural irrigation, based on water intakes from springs and rivers distributed by gravity through earth or stone channels. The Andalusian channel included sophisticated technical elements: alcubillas (deposits), splitters, almenaras (sluice gates) and waterwheels. Its diffusion through the Peninsula transformed peninsular Mediterranean agriculture.
Anthroponym
A personal name, often used as the base of toponyms (Lucronius → Logroño, Sigerici → Castrojeriz, Sacavus → Sacavém).
Arabism
A word or place name in Castilian, Portuguese or Catalan borrowed from Andalusian Arabic. The Peninsula preserves thousands: aceite, azúcar, almohada, alcázar, azulejo, Guadalquivir, Atalaia, Azofra, Azambuja.
