Petín
Ourense · OrenseGalicia
Of disputed origin: from a Latin personal name Petinius —the estate of a certain Petinius— or from a reference to a 'set stone', a boundary marker or milestone of the Roman road. Neither reading has consensus.
Evolution of the name
- (fundus) Petinii (?) Latin Roman era
- Petín Galician modern
Reflections, to the letter
Petín is a small name, honest in its doubt. It may come from a Roman Petinius, owner of the estate that kept his name, or from a 'set stone' —a marker, a milestone— of the road that passed through here. No one has proven it, and it is fair to admit so. Look at the ground: the Vía Nova from Braga to Astorga ran through this district, and the Forum Gigurrorum lay not far off. Whether person or stone, the name was born of a road, the same one you now walk.
