Puente de Domingo Flórez
El Puente de Domingo Flórez
LeónCastilla y León
From the Latin pontem 'bridge' —after the stone bridge over the river Cabrera that gave rise to the town in the 13th century— followed by the personal name Domingo Flórez, of the Flórez lineage, 'son of Froila'.

Reflections, to the letter
Cross the Cabrera and you will be standing on the reason for the name. Here, around 1230, a stone bridge replaced the fords and charged a toll to let travellers pass; from the Latin pontem and the house of the Flórez —'sons of Froila'— everything else followed. You are on the border: a few kilometres more and Leonese yields to Galician, the Cabrera gives its waters to the Sil, and the roof over you is already slate, the stone this district splits into sheets. The town is, literally, a crossing.
