Burela

Camino del Mar

LugoGalicia

Of unresolved origin. The Real Academia Galega rejects the popular explanations —burel (coarse cloth or heraldic band), the buoy— and points to a personal name, without fixing the etymon.

It is a name that still resists. The Academy's Toponimia de Galicia reviews and rejects the popular etymologies of Burela: neither from burel, the coarse brown cloth or the narrow band of heraldry; nor from boia, the harbour buoy —tempting in a sea town, but false—. It points instead toward anthroponymy: a personal name at the base, the estate of a certain *Burellus or the like. But it does not close it, and neither will we force it: medieval forms to prove it are lacking. Beneath the name is far older settlement —the site and the idol of Burela, of the Bronze Age—, prior to any Burellus. Today it is the great tuna port of the Mariña; the name, for now, remains untranslated.

Reflections, to the letter

Burela is an unresolved name, and the Galician Academy itself says so. It rejects the easy readings —the burel of cloth and heraldry, the harbour buoy (tempting here, but false)— and points to a personal name, without closing it. Beneath it is Bronze-Age settlement, with its famous idol, prior to any owner. It is the great tuna port of the Mariña; its name, for now, stays silent. There are toponyms like that, and it is fair to say so.
