Portela do Homem

Camino de la Geira y los Arrieiros

Ourense · OrenseGalicia

From the Latin portella, diminutive of porta: 'the little gate', the low pass that opens the Gerês range; followed by do Homem, 'of the river Homem', whose valley the road climbs.

The name describes a door. Portela is the diminutive of the Latin porta, and in Galician and Portuguese it names the col, the low pass between mountains —the little gate by which a range is crossed without being crowned—. This one, at eight hundred and twenty-two metres, is the natural gate of the Gerês, and through it Rome threaded its Via Nova two thousand years ago; today it marks the border between Portugal and Galicia. The second element, do Homem, 'of the man', is the name of the river whose valley the pass follows: probably an old hydronym reinterpreted. Right here, on the border, survive some of the most famous milestones of the Camino, Roman columns that still tell how many miles it is to Braga.

Reflections, to the letter

You cross a door: that is Portela, the diminutive of the Latin porta, 'the little gate' through which the Gerês range is passed without climbing to the top. At eight hundred metres, this is the border between Portugal and Galicia, and through here Rome threaded its road. Look to the sides of the path: in few places in the world do so many milestones remain together as at this pass. You are entering Galicia by the same gate as the legions, and the stones still count the miles.
