PontevedraGalicia
A plant-name: from codeso —the shrub Adenocarpus— plus the collective suffix -eda (from the Latin -eta): 'the codeso-ground', the place where the codesos abound.
Evolution of the name
- codeso + -eda (< -eta) Latin / Galician plant collective
- Codeseda Galician modern
Reflections, to the letter
The last big name before Santiago is a yellow flower. Codeseda is 'the codeso-ground', from the codeso —the shrub that gilds these hills in spring— and the suffix -eda, 'place thick with', as carballeda is of oaks. No mystery: the plant is there, in the hills of the Testeiro, and the name says no more. You are already descending toward the Apostle; in the parish remains the memory of a monastery of Augas Santas from before 1164. Little codeso separates you from Compostela.
