Compound Basque toponym. Aitz (variant az-, 'rock, crag') plus buru ('head, end'), designates 'rocky head' or 'end of the crag', descriptive of the calcareous elevation on which the hamlet sits.

The hamlet of Aspuru, in the foothills of the Iturrieta range, preserves the Alavese rural houses of the 17th to 19th centuries with dozens of emblazoned houses of the old Basque hidalgos.

Aitz (Basque)
Pre-Roman Basque word for 'rock, crag, rocky terrain', one of the most productive orographic lexemes of Basque and Pyrenean toponymy. Cognate of Aquitanian haitz-. It appears in dozens of Basque toponyms: Aitzgorri, Aizkorri, Aspuru, Aitzbeltz. Also productive in anthroponymy (Aitor).
